Job Description

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe is an organisation that specialises in population health research and programming, including on sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. CeSHHAR has an extensive national, regional, and international academic and community partnership network. CeSHHAR has a diverse range of funders which include the Wellcome Trust, the Gates Foundation, UK Medical Research Council, Templeton World Charity Foundation, Global Fund for AIDS TB and Malaria, UNICEF and UNFPA. We partner very closely with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (UK). CeSHHAR is implementing a National Key Population programme on behalf of National AIDS Council and Ministry of Health and Child Care in all 10 provinces in Zimbabwe. The Communications Officer – Climate, Environment & Health supports the Climate, Environment & Health Department wider communications agenda through a matrix reporting structure. Working operationally under the CEH Programme Manager and receiving technical guidance from the Communications Specialist, the role focuses on producing high-quality visual and written content that amplifies departmental studies.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Implements the communication plan under the guidance and support of the Communications Specialist
• Creates, schedules, and monitors routine content across platforms using content calendars aligned with Climate, Environment & Health priorities, ensuring strong engagement and visibility.
• Conducts routine check of the CeSHHAR website to ensure it is up to date and alerts the supervisor of any challenges
• Scans social media for any communication or questions and alerts the relevant stakeholders to provide an appropriate response for supervisor’s review.
• Writes stories, captures compelling field and event photos/videos, assist with the design of branded materials, and maintain digital platforms in line with CeSHHAR’ s communication standards for review by the Communications Specialist and Program Manager
• Produces high-quality multimedia and design outputs
Captures and edits photos/videos from fieldwork and events in line with program activities
• Designs graphics, infographics, and communication materials using Canva/Adobe Suite, maintaining brand and scientific accuracy and submits for supervisor approval
• Generates and curates’ content for blogs, newsletters, and research-uptake products
Translates technical information into accessible stories, summaries, and digital features, support researchers in shaping messages for non-technical audiences.
• Manages digital assets and analytics and provides periodic reports to the Supervisor.
Maintains and updates an organised library of photos, videos, and design files.
• Track social-media and web analytics and submits concise reports to the supervisor to inform communication strategy.
• Supports departmental communication activities and engagements
Coordinates interviews, posts, webinars, and communication tasks; provides proofreading, fact-checking, and administrative support to strengthen overall research communication under the guidance and support of the supervisor
• Assists in planning and coordinating events and activities.
• Provides operational support in branding activities to the Communications Specialist

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Media, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field.
• 3 years post qualification experience in communications, digital media, or content creation.
• Experience in the (NGO/research sector is a plus).
• Proficiency in using a DSLR camera for event/project photography and photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop).
• Basic graphic design skills using Canva and Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
• Proficiency in social media platforms (Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram).
• Proficiency with digital tools
• Experience with email marketing tools (Mailchimp, HubSpot).
• Understanding of Search Engine Optimisation principles and Google Analytics.
• Understanding of public relations, customer service and good communication.
• The role involves extensive travel to project sites to collect stories/content and having a licence, willingness and to ride a motor bike will be an added advantage.
• Familiarity with climate change, maternal health, or SRHR topics
