Title: Study Coordinator for Qualitative Study

Location: Harare, Zimbabwe

Period: January 2021-June 2021

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing pediatric HIV infection and eliminating pediatric AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention, care, and treatment programs.

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation will be conducting a study to assess the feasibility, acceptability and effects of providing Raltegravir granules to HIV-positive neonates in public health facilities in Zimbabwe. Therefore, EGPAF intends to engage a Study Coordinator on consultancy basis to serve as the principal administrative liaison for the study; coordinate and administer study associated activities. S/he will assist in planning and ensure that pre-established work scope, study protocol, and regulatory requirements are followed. S/he will also oversee and coordinate the provision of administrative services, including supervision of research support staff and developing and maintaining record keeping systems and procedures. The study includes qualitative and quantitative components, so experience in both methodologies is required although qualitative skills will be prioritized.

Duties and Responsibilities

-Plan and coordinate the initiation of the study

-Maintain all required regulatory documentation

-Establish operating policies and procedures

-Plan, implement, and maintain data collection systems in support of the study

-Plan and coordinate recruitment of research support staff as appropriate to the study

-Provide support for study-related training activities

-Ensure that all the data collectors and other study investigators also complete the Human Subjects Training course and send those to Washington D.C. Also maintain copies of these certificates and CVs in the regulatory binder.

-After piloting the data collection tools, update the tools with any needed changes the team identifies

-Assist in the drafting of the standard operating procedures (SOPs)

-Update the SOPs during and following the study training

-Supervise the data collectors for the quantitative component and the research assistants for the qualitative component

-Observe recruitment of study participants

-Observe research assistants collecting data in the field

-Listen to recorded in-depth interviews and ensure research assistants are probing adequately

-Be the main point of contact for the research assistants, if there are challenges in the field or they have any questions, be available to answer their questions and direct them accordingly

-Contact/visit the selected health facilities and meet with senior staff and request permission to conduct the study at their site, provide them with any requested information

-Provide study sites with anticipated dates for data collection

-Supervise the simultaneous transcription/translation of the qualitative data and ensure they are being done correctly

-Review the written transcripts while listening to the audio recording and ensure that they are translated correctly and that the full content of the interview has been captured in the transcript. This can be done for a subset of the data.

-Monitor the progress of research activities; develop and maintain records of research activities, and prepare periodic and ad hoc reports, as required

-Participate in data compilation, data cleaning, analysis and reporting to ensure high quality data collection

-Liaise with officials from the Ministry of Health and Regional Administrative Offices as well as officials and leaders at community level during the study implementation

-Liaise with the study team to provide supervisory oversight of project staff, as well as guidance and support for effective implementation

-Coordinate provision of study updates throughout implementation and dissemination of results at the end of the study

-Monitor project expenditures ensuring that they are in line with the budget.

Qualifications and Experience

-A Bachelors’ Degree in Research Methods/Public Health or other related fields

-A Masters’ degree in public health or Research related field will be an added advantage

-3-5 years proven experience working with operations research

-3-5 years of proven experience working with health programs

-Knowledgeable in country level data management and compilation

-Managerial skills-able to manage/coordinate data collection staff

-Ability to work as needed on evenings and weekends

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Experience with both quantitative and qualitative data is required

-Previous working experience in Zimbabwe and knowledge of local culture

-Ability to work well independently and within a team

-Good knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS issues in the health sector

-Good understanding of research methodologies, research ethics

-Good attention to detail and excellent follow-through

-Strong written and verbal skills

-Computer literacy including use of analytical packages (Epi Info, Stata, SAS, SPSS) would be an advantage

-Written and spoken knowledge in English, Shona and Ndebele is required.
