Job Description

POSITION- GEOTECH
LOCATION- GADZEMA, CHEGUTU
Description of the role
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill in the above post which has arisen at Magaya Mining.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities
1. Mine Site Investigation and Analysis:
➢ Conduct geological and geotechnical investigations to assess the properties and stability
of the rock mass at the mine site. This may involve tasks like:
• Analysing existing geological data and reports.
• Planning and overseeing drilling programs to collect rock core samples.
• Performing laboratory testing on rock samples to determine their strength,
deformation characteristics, and potential for weathering or instability.
• Analysing groundwater conditions and potential impacts on underground
workings.
➢ Evaluate geological hazards associated with the mine site, such as faults, fractures, and
potential for landslides or rockfalls.
➢ Assess the bearing capacity of the ground to support mine infrastructure like stockpiles,
waste dumps, and processing plants.
2. Design Recommendations and Support Systems:
➢ Based on the site investigation results, recommend appropriate design parameters for
mine slopes, pit walls, and underground excavations. This includes factors like slope
angles, ground support requirements (e.g., rock bolts, shotcrete), and excavation
sequencing.
➢ Design or recommend ground support systems for underground workings, including
rock bolts, shotcrete, mesh, and pillars.
➢ Analyse the stability of existing mine openings and recommend remedial measures if
necessary.
➢ Work collaboratively with mine engineers and planners to optimize mine design and
production methods from a geotechnical perspective.
3. Monitoring and Risk Management:
➢ Develop and implement a geotechnical monitoring program to track ground movement,
pore water pressure, and other parameters that could indicate potential instability.
➢ Analyse monitoring data and identify any trends or early warning signs that could signal
a potential hazard.
➢ Recommend mitigation strategies to address identified risks, such as adjusting
excavation plans, implementing additional ground support, or evacuating personnel if
necessary.
➢ Conduct regular inspections of mine workings to identify any visible signs of instability
or deterioration of ground conditions.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications and Experience
➢ A bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering with a geotechnical
specialization, or a related field is preferred.
➢ Strong understanding of rock mechanics, engineering geology, and mine design
principles.
➢ Clean class 4 driver’s licence.
➢ Proficiency in geotechnical analysis software and tools specific to the mining industry.
➢ Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
➢ Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with engineers, geologists,
surveyors, and other mining personnel.
➢ Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a potentially challenging and
hazardous environment.
➢ Familiarity with relevant mining safety regulations and best practices.
