Job Description

These Legal Officer responsible for delivering legal services for children experiencing violence. The officer will be responsible for delivering legal counselling and support for families and child survivors. He/she will conduct legal clinics within communities focused on GBV, conduct awareness campaigns, conduct court monitoring (including community courts) and liaison with district courts.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Establish and operationalise legal help desks for children in the justice system at district magistrates’ courts
• Conduct court monitoring sessions at children’s and magistrates’ courts (and community courts) to identify children facing violence
• Assist in court preparation for children and their caregivers
• Coordinate with Prosecutors, pre-court legal counselling and preparation support to GBV survivors, witnesses and medical experts before court sessions
• Escort child survivors of sexual abuse to police and courts
• Facilitate referrals for survivors of sexual violence for critical post GBV services including PEP, EC, STI treatments and other non-clinical GBV services that include, emergency support and therapeutic support and safe shelter.

Qualifications and Experience

A law degree or equivalent with current registration with the relevant practitioners’ council.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with child survivors of violence in the justice system.
• Knowledge of technical areas such as HIV, SGBV, child protection, work with adolescents and youth
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders including government representatives, local community organizations, donors, and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated success providing effective technical assistance and transferring skills to government and communities
