Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, maintenance, and optimization of mechanical systems and equipment used in waste-to-energy conversion processes and waste collection operations. The role ensures that all plant and fleet equipment operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with environmental and technical standards to support sustainable waste management and energy generation.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plant Operations and Maintenance
Oversee the installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems in the waste-to-energy (WtE) facility, including turbines, boilers, pumps, conveyors, and shredders.
Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and enhance equipment lifespan.
Troubleshoot mechanical faults, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
Develop and update maintenance schedules and documentation in line with ISO and environmental standards.

2. Design and Technical Support
Provide engineering input for process improvements and mechanical design modifications.
Collaborate with the electrical and process engineering teams to ensure system integration and optimal performance.
Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for mechanical works and upgrades.
Support project planning, installation, and commissioning of new plant equipment.

3. Waste Collection and Fleet Systems
Monitor and maintain the mechanical integrity of waste collection vehicles, compactors, and transfer systems.
Implement vehicle maintenance programs and manage spare parts inventory.
Ensure workshop operations follow safety and quality control procedures.

4. Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
Enforce compliance with national and international health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards.
Conduct risk assessments and participate in safety audits and incident investigations.
Promote sustainable engineering practices that reduce emissions and mechanical waste.

5. Reporting and Documentation
Prepare maintenance reports, equipment performance logs, and project progress updates.
Maintain accurate records of mechanical systems, spare parts, and maintenance histories.
Provide technical input for annual budgeting and capital improvement plans.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in industrial plant operations, preferably in waste-to-energy, power generation, or waste management sectors.
Professional certification or registration with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) is an added advantage.
Proven experience in boilers, turbines, conveyors, compressors, or hydraulic systems.
Strong understanding of preventive maintenance systems and project management principles.
Knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainable energy technologies is desirable.
