Job Description

The Council of the National University of Science and Technology is inviting applications to fill the post of Pro-Vice Chancellor - Innovation and Business Development. Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the position is strategic to the attainment of the University's mission and goals. The University is seeking an individual of personal and professional integrity, with a distinguished record of accomplishment in higher education or related professional field. An earned research Doctorate (PhD/DPhil) in science, technology or engineering and demonstrated analytical and business/problem-solving skills are essential. A business related qualification would be an added advantage. The incumbent will be responsible for initiating, recommending, implementing and monitoring policies, systems and procedures dealing with University innovation, business development and any other functions delegated by the Vice Chancellor.
The position therefore calls for a versatile, a respected individual with a proven record of business achievement and an individual who can provide critical leadership that will help empower the University to diversify its revenue base so as to strengthen its academic and research funding. The post requires an outstanding academic who has at least ten (10) years working experience in university business development, of which five (5) years should be at senior management level; minimum is at the level of a Dean of Faculty or its equivalent, with a distinguished record of innovation, business development and implementation of business projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
The successful candidate will be required to carry out the following:
Resource mobilisation:
• Mobilises financial and human capital resources as well as technology driven hardware and software for capacitating the University in its innovation, commercialisation and industrialisation drive.
• Indentifies and engages possible funders, partners, investors and collaborators for projects that lead to innovation and creation of new products, services and systems.
• Coordinates purposive research to solve problems in the surrounding communities and at national and international levels.
Innovation
• Identifies innovations and inventions from research outputs from Staff and Students that have a potential for commercialisation, for further development, modelling and incubation.
• Superintends over the establishment and the operations of Innovation Hubs which transform knowledge into tangible products commercialisation.
• Leads in the establishment of and the operational framework for, Industrial Parks
Commercialisation
• Co-ordinates, protects and commercialises research in collaboration with industry and other investors.
• Ensures prompt registration of patents and commercialisation of new products, services or systems.
• Leads in the creation of Spinoffs, Joint Ventures and other short term and long term income generating projects.
Management/Corporate governance of the University;
• Endures adherence to statutory requirements and regulations as well as policies that promote ethical and transparent transactions.
• Sets up business management systems that comply with best practice in procurement, processing, marketing and distribution value chains.
Quality assurance
• Enhances quality of student experience, research and community engagement in problem based research that leads to solving real life problems in an affordable and accessible manner.
• Ensures internal compliance with national and international quality standards in the manufacturing, marketing and administrative processes associated with running projects and businesses.
Internationalisation
• Promotes collaborative research and partnerships as an integral part of a modern University.

Qualifications and Experience

• Visionary, dynamic and innovative leader endowed with strategic thinking skills and progressive attitudes for effective articulation of the mission and goals of the University as these relate to corporate development;
• Appreciation and understanding of the University academic business and how it impacts on University commercial business; extensive experience in policy making, strategic planning and quality assurance;
• Interpersonal skills to foster harmonious relationships between and among various University constituencies especially with the business sector;
• Emotional stability and ability to balance the requirements of different stakeholders of the University;
• Technical appreciation and understanding of the University finances, innovative administrative controls, budgeting, planning and investment analysis;
• Innovative abilities to initiate, develop and maintain creative strategies in business development to address the financial challenges that confront the University in the twenty-first century;
• Ability to create wealth and to assist in the development and implementation of the University business projects;
• Experience in financial management, budgeting, immediate and long term planning;
• Ability to establish public and private partnerships to foster business relationships;
• Abilityto identify, develop and commercialise emerging technologies for sustainable development of the economy.
• Knowledgeable in issues of intellectual property, innovation and technology development
• Well published in his/her discipline.
