LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
POST: RESEARCH FELLOW (ENGLISH) – 1 POST

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Research Fellow (English) is a principal scholar who undertakes research and consultancy work in the Institute. The Research Fellow will also take lead in the mobilisation of funds for the Institute through consultancy work and research grants; and in line with this, the Research Fellow plans, coordinates and implements research programmes and language consultancy work in accordance with University strategy, policy and procedures and funder requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Acts as principal investigator, team leader or co-investigator on research projects;
Carries out original, high-level individual and/or collaborative research with other team members;
Prepares and writes high quality papers for submission to high impact peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings;
Makes presentations at conferences or exhibits work at other appropriate events;
Offers tutorials to clients in his/her particular portfolio;
Participates in committee meetings with other researchers and support staff;
Actively seeks research funding as far as is reasonably possible;
Writes or contributes to publications or disseminates research findings using media appropriate to the discipline;
Edits and compiles research papers for publication as monographs or edited volumes;
Resolves problems of meeting research objectives and deadlines;
Develops ideas for the generation of income and the promotion of language research;
Mentors colleagues with less experience and advises them on research and academic development;
Supervises Language Research Assistants, for example, in consultancy work or in research teams or projects;
Plans, coordinates and implements research programmes including managing the use of research resources;
Carries out language consultancy work;
Develops ideas for generating income for the Institute;
Complies with all ethical requirements for research activities;
Leads bidding for major research and/or consultancy projects;
Supervises students undertaking Masters and Doctoral degrees;
Responds to requests for language policy advice from the public and the private sectors, directly or through the Director;
Contributes in the electronic and print media on language issues;
Assists in the administration of the Institute, by serving on committees or otherwise, as determined by the Director; and
Discharges any other job-related duties and responsibilities assigned by the Director.

Qualifications and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must be a holder of a First Degree in English, Master’s Degree in English and a Doctorate Degree in English or Linguistics.
In addition to proficiency in English, the candidate must be a natural speaker-writer of an officially recognised indigenous language of Zimbabwe.
Professorship will be an added advantage.
At least 3 years related experience.
