ROADS TECHNICIAN
Grade: 11
Reports To: Assistant Director Operations
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the vacant post.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Assisting in the planning, design, supervision and maintenance of Council roads, streets and related infrastructure.
• Conducting routine inspections of roads, drainage systems, culverts, road shoulders and associated infrastructure.
• Identifying road defects, assessing their condition and recommending appropriate maintenance or rehabilitation measures.
• Preparing technical reports, site inspection reports, work schedules and other road-related documentation.
• Supervising road maintenance, rehabilitation and construction works undertaken by Council employees and contractors.
• Taking measurements, collecting site data and assisting with the preparation of quantities and estimates for road works.
• Monitoring the quality and progress of road works to ensure compliance with approved specifications and standards.
• Assisting with setting out road works and checking levels, dimensions and alignment on site.
• Monitoring the use of materials, equipment and labour on road projects and reporting any discrepancies.
• Inspecting drainage structures, storm-water channels and culverts and recommending remedial works where necessary.
• Liaising with contractors, consultants, Council departments and other stakeholders on road-related projects.
• Maintaining accurate records of road maintenance activities, projects, inspections and materials used.
• Assisting in the preparation of annual road maintenance and development programmes.
• Ensuring compliance with relevant engineering standards, occupational health and safety requirements and Council procedures.
• Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Person Specification
• A National Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering, Highway Engineering, Roads Engineering or a related field from a recognised institution.
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related qualification will be an added advantage.
• At least 2 years’ relevant post-qualification experience in roads, civil works, construction or infrastructure maintenance.
• Practical experience in road construction, road maintenance, drainage works and site supervision.
• Knowledge of road construction materials, methods, measurements and quality control.
• Experience working in a local authority or public-sector environment will be an added advantage.
• A valid driver’s licence.
